Buying Guide

How to choose your pool filter?

27/06/2022
Buying guide for what to look for when choosing your pool filter
In order to choose the right pool filter, we need to answer several questions:
  1. What are my filtration needs?
  2. What type of filter should I install?
  3. What size filter should I fit?

QUESTION 1: WHAT ARE MY FILTRATION NEEDS?

It is you, the customer, who knows best what type of pool you have, how you use it and what your filtration needs are. We will give you some examples but it is up to you to be aware of the type of filtration system you need, even if it means a little bit of money.

Example 1: If you have a 5x3 pool and every weekend you have an average of 15 people in your pool. Itis clear that you need a good purification system as you are a lot of people for the small volume of water. Remember that creams, sunscreens, oils, make-up and sweat are elements that the filter must clean.

Example 2. You have a 10x6 pool and you are a family of 5 members (including a large pet) and you only use the pool at weekends. You do not need an excessively large purification system, just a standard and balanced one.

Example 3. 10x7 pool of a holiday accommodation that is rented out for a maximum of 6 persons. Although the load of people here is not high, it is a holiday home and therefore the workload varies a lot depending on the circumstances. At some times it can be very low and at other times very high. Ideally, you should know more about what kind of customers you usually have in order to adapt the purification system to the needs of the most unfavourable situation.

Example 4. 5x2 removable and inflatable swimming pool for small children. Used by 2 children. Here, although a basic filtration system would be sufficient, we do not recommend cartridge filters. They are too small and inefficient. Unless it is an exceptional case of a small, inflatable pool, used 1 or 2 times a month (which would be worth a simple and cheap basic cartridge filter) we would always recommend sand filters. In this case, monobloc.

QUESTION 2. WHAT TYPE OF FILTER TO INSTALL?

Once you know what your needs are and you can explain them to us, we will move on to the types of filters that exist.

Generally speaking, there are many types of filters but the most common are: cartridge filter, sand filter, diatomaceous earth filter, monobloc (similar to sand filters) and filter houses.

CARTRIDGE FILTER

These filters have cartridges that can be replaced every year and are ideal for removable and small pools. Filtration is carried out on a paper cartridge (similar to a coffee filter)

An example of this are these cartridge filters AR125 of the brand GRE

  • Advantages: Cheap, simple, easy to clean and install.
  • Disadvantages: They are so simple that, on many occasions, they are not effective and do not clean properly. They are only valid for very small pools designed for small children and even babies or for pools that you will use very occasionally (disposable, inflatable...).

SAND FILTER

These are the most common filters as they require almost no maintenance and their quality is good.
The water is cleaned through a tank with sand. They stand out for their durability, which could last up to ten years, although it is advisable to change them before.
They can increase their filtration capacity by changing the filtering material, for example, if you change the sand for glass, you will increase their filtration capacity by up to 15% more.

An example of this type of product are the Astralpool Aster filters. Astralpool Aster Filters (fibreglass) or the Hayward Pro Series (high density polyethylene).

  • Advantages: Durable and permanent. Very good filtration capacity. Spare parts for easy repair. Upgradeable depending on type of filter load.
  • Disadvantages: No disadvantages. The only thing you need is to know the power of the pool pump you have so that the system is balanced.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FILTER:

This is the most expensive type of filter as it is the filter with the highest quality and purification capacity on the market
Diatoms are fossilised microscopic beings that act as filtering agents with great efficiency, even eliminating microscopic particles that are impossible to see with the human eye.
These filters are ideal for those who want to have water that is more than 94% clean

An example of this product is this one Astralpool Diatomite Filters
  • Advantages: It is the best filtration system on the market
  • Disadvantages: High price

MONOBLOC FILTER:

This is the most commonly used type of filter for removable pools that require a quality filtration system. They often replace the aforementioned cartridge filters. These filters are a "miniature" version of sand filters and behave identically.
They can be filled with either sand or glass (glass always guarantees greater cleaning efficiency).
Its most important characteristic is indicated by its name: mono-block, i.e. it consists of a complete block formed by the filter and the pump. This construction avoids having to select a filter size in accordance with the pool pump, as both elements will always be balanced from the factory.

An example of these monoblocs are the Monobloc Cyclone filters of the brand Coral
  • Advantages: Simple but high quality system with very good purification capacity. Ideal for small, removable and even inflatable pools.
  • Disadvantages: Difficulty in finding spare parts.

PURIFYING HUTS

They are "all in one" where you can find pre-installed: filter, pump and selector valve. Everything is ready to connect and use.

These are large containers that are widely used for land with little space where everything needs to be concentrated in the same "box". As with the monoblocs, these boxes come pre-configured so you don't have to worry about whether the filter and pump are balanced - you can be sure that they are!

You can find 3 types of box: buried, semi-buried and elevated. Pay attention to the type of pool house you need!

Example of an inground pool house: Ramses Inground Compact
Example of a semi-inground pool house: Astralpool Semi-inground pool house

Example of an elevated pool house: Ramses Up Elevated Compact

  • Advantages: All-in-one system ready to install and operate. The system is factory balanced.
  • Disadvantages: Difficult to find spare parts or make modifications due to the limited space available in the shed.
  • Everything is measured to the millimetre.
QUESTION 3. WHAT SIZE OF FILTER SHOULD I FIT?

In order to properly decide on your filter, you need to look at several factors: pool size, pump power and filtration needs.
  • We talked about filtration needs in the first point. This is something very important to take into account.
  • To select the filter model according to the size of your pool and the power of the pump, we recommend using this guide table which will be very useful. In it we can see the ideal diameter (in mm) according to the power of the pump. WARNING! This is not always the case but it helps us to establish a first search.
  • Remember that the size of the filter and the power of the pump must be balanced.
